Bermuda Bicycling Association (BBA) president Peter Dunne has hailed the performances of the winners at the recent BBA awards ceremony.Among those being honoured for their achievements over the past season were Chequan Richardson, Ian Port, Dominique Mayho, and the surprise of the night, Male Rider of the Year, Mark Hatherley.Hatherley was the most consistent rider in the Male ‘A’ category, being crowned national champion at the Bermuda Bicycle Association Criterium, finishing second in the BBA Road Race Series, a meagre four points behind eventual champions Brian Drea, winning three races throughout the season.“I am very honoured to have been selected as rider of the year,” said Hatherley. “Every season I just try to give a 110 percent for Team Winners Edge, but I never expected to win it with so many cyclists riding well, but fortunately the 2011 season has been one of my most successful to date.“All this is not possible without the support of my wife, family and team-mates. The hard work and dedication my team put into last season (as every other season) has paid off. Now we will concentrate on 2012.”For Richardson, another Winner’s Edge rider, winning the most improved junior rider showed he is making steady progress in the sport, and claiming the final road race of the year in his category.Port won the senior version of the same award, while Mayho capped off another sterling season, winning the Junior rider of the Year.Dunne said: “Mark (Hatherley) was the most consistent male rider in 2011 in all disciplines. He was successful in mountain bike, time trial, criterium and road race.“Chequan (Richardson) has been a part of the cycling club at Berkeley Institute for several years and racing with the BBA for as long.“Ian (Port) has been a strong member of his team (Bicycle Works) for several years but in 2011 he became the team’s core in road racing.“This is the third successive year Dominique (Mayho) has been awarded this prize.“He captured the junior national championship titles in mountain biking, time trial and criterium and capped the year with a gold medal in the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Puerto Rico.The new road cycling season starts next month.
