Senior Islanders sitting pretty thanks to charity

The Ross Blackie Talbot (RBT) Charity recently donated approximately $4,000 to help the Senior Islanders Club (SIC) effort to upgrade Admiralty House.

In recognition of the 1999 United Nations International Year of Older Persons designation, the charity donated the grant to SIC to be used to provide seating for senior citizens in the main dining room and meeting rooms of Admiralty House Community Centre which is 30 years old.

The Complete Office assisted with the request by offering the seating at a reduced rate to the RBT Charity Committee.

Clement Talbot, founder and chairman, along with Derek Stapley, treasurer, said in a statement: "We are pleased to support your organisation in its efforts to improve our senior citizens' quality of life through activities and social interaction.'' The SIC was established 24 years ago and provides community and recreational activities for seniors on an island-wide basis.

The events of 18 senior's groups are all co-ordinated by SIC. Because of the numerous activities taking place at all locations simultaneously, furniture and other related meeting materials are actually moved about between the groups.

Fred Hassell, Director, and Winston Minors, fundraising volunteer of SIC, both expressed their thanks saying: "We greatly appreciate this donation coming on the heels of the United Nations' International Year Of Older Persons.

The RBT Charity Committee performed something of a rescue mission for SIC as basic seating needs were required to be met and earmarked specifically for SIC at Admiralty House.

Some of the organisations' many activities include computer classes, arts and crafts projects, concerts, and luncheons with guest speakers. The SIC Newsletter is published each month to help promote club activities.

The RBT Charity Invitational Golf Tournament has been raising funds for various Bermudian charities for the past seven years. For the year 2000, the Tournament Committee has set a target of $100,000 to be raised for use by the Island's youth.

The National Youth Jazz Ensemble, Bermuda Junior Golf Association, The Family Learning Centre and The Coaltion for the Protection of Children have been selected as beneficiaries of the April 5th tournament to be held at Riddell's Bay Golf & Country Club.

Mr. Talbot stated: "Having fulfilled our 1999 mission to support Bermuda's seniors by providing a van for the Packwood Home, seating for SIC and grants to the Matilda Smith Williams Seniors Residence and the Pembroke Parish Rest Home, we are anxious to embark on our 2000 initiative to aid Bermuda's youth.''
