Raynor finds form with half-century for Rangers

Southampton Rangers batsman Shannon Rayner staked his claim for a recall to the Bermuda national team with a half-century against Somerset yesterday.

Part of the Island's 14-man squad for the ICC Americas Championship, Rayner is yet to play in either of the Island's two opening games, and was sent back to play for his club while the other players enjoyed a day off.

Rayner has been out of form so far this season but he more than made up for it yesterday, scoring 50 in front of national head coach David Moore and skipper David Hemp.

With Janeiro Tucker expected to sit out today's game against Cayman Islands, Rayner's knock couldn't have come at a more opportune time. Happily for Rayner and his Rangers team-mates it also coincided with their second win of the season.

Dion Stovell gave the visitors a good start with a fine 70, and Rayner and Dwayne Leverock both scored half-centuries as Southampton scored 264 for eight in their 50 overs.

Leverock and Quinton Burch then bowled their side to a convincing 106-run victory. Leverock took three wickets, while Quinton Burch took four for 25 as Somerset were bowled out for 158.

While Rayner was enjoying his time in the middle, his national team-mates Kevin Tucker and Fiqre Crockwell could only watch as their club side, PHC, were beaten by St David's at Southampton Oval.

The Belco Cup winners have had a torrid start to the league season so far, and slumped to their third consecutive defeat yesterday. Batting first, PHC were soon reduced to 13 for three as Greg Foggo and Angelo Cannonier tore into the PHC top order.

Cannonier took three wickets for 41 runs from his ten overs, and Foggo grabbed two wickets, and PHC were struggling at 40 for five at one stage.

That they got to three figures was in no small part due to the hard hitting Dean Stephens (24) and the stubborn resistance of Cal Waldron (22).

PHC's total of 131 was never likely to cause St David's too many problems, but Kama Leverock gave them a few nervy moments nonetheless.

The PHC bowler took three wickets for 25 runs, but OJ Pitcher (42) and Landro Minors (26) saw their side to 134-6, and a four wicket win in 29.1 overs.

Bailey's Bay meanwhile continued to confound their critics, beating Willow Cuts by five wickets for their third win of the season thus remaining undefeated. Tipped to struggle in some quarters, Bay are the only side with a 100 percent record so far, and won yesterday, despite the absence of national team trio Irving Romaine, Stephen Outerbridge and Jim West.

Winning the toss after the Willow Cuts skipper hadn't come to take the toss in the time allocated, Bay managed to skittle out the visitors for a meagre 154 in 39 overs.

Somerset Cup Match player Deuntay Darrell top scored for Cuts with 25, who had Malachi Jones, Chris Douglas, George O'Brien jr., and Kevon Fubler amongst their ranks.

The day didn't start off good for the men from the West End, who were 53 for three at one point and slumped further to 127 for seven and eight in a short spell before being eventually bowled out for 154.

Burton Outerbridge took two for 44, while Wendell White (3-31), and Cal Dill (2-33) helped in the bowling department.

Dennico Hollis also took one wicket.

In reply, Bay made it to the finish line with 18.3 overs to spare. Leading the charge home was veteran Cal Dill who produced a stroke filled 61 to make the victory possible.

With the home side wobbling from a shaky start, Dill strolled to the crease and proceeded to ease the home fan's nerves, forming valuable partnerships with Wendell White (33), Marvin Trott (11) and Jermaine Outerbridge (16) to guide the early leaders home.

O'Brien jr. took three wickets for 38, while Jones (1-34) and Darrell (1-14).

In the First Division St George's racked up another big win, beating Somerset Bridge by 136 at Wellington Oval.

Richard Todd scored 108 as St George's compiled 274 in 37.4 overs. Donnie Charles was the pick of the Bridge bowlers, taking four for 49.

Bridge's reply never really got started, Ryan Steede and Rudel Pitcher both took three wickets as the visitors were bowled out for 138 in 35.1 overs.

Cleveland County also beat Western Stars by four wickets at St. John's Field to keep pace with the front pack.

Batting first, Justin Robinson made 82 for the home side as they posted 209 for 8, with Machai Young being Cleveland's best bowler, taking two for 30.

In reply, Cleveland made 210 for six, Stephen Douglas jr. being their high man wit 77.

Stars best bowler was Brian Hall who claimed three wickets for 35 runs.

Flatts Victoria defeated Warwick, however, details of the match could not be confirmed last night.
