Freddy?s double seals Southend promotion

Shaun Goater?s Southend United sealed promotion on Saturday after twice coming from behind on a dramatic day in Wales.

The Shrimpers fought to a 2-2 draw against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium in the penultimate game of their season, booking a place in next year?s League Championship although the League One title will go on the line next weekend in Goater?s final game against Bristol City at Roots Hall.

Southend are one point clear of Essex rivals Colchester heading into the last weekend of the year and their concerns over missing automatic promotion after a late-season dip in form were erased on Saturday courtesy of a brace from wonderboy Freddy Eastwood.

Rory Fallon handed play-off chasing Swansea the lead after 19 minutes only for Eastwood to pull things level eight minutes later. Fallon then again nudged the home side in front just before half time but Eastwood scored another dazzler just after the hour mark to seal the point.

Once it was confirmed that third-placed Brentford had dropped points, Southend?s second consecutive promotion was complete and the celebrations began.

?I thought it was a tremendous effort from the team and that performance sums up what we have been about this year,? said manager SteveTilson.

?It is a great day, Freddy has scored two great goals, but overall we showed great spirit and character to come back and I am just over the moon.

?It hasn?t really sunk in yet, but it is a great achievement by everyone. I think we have the smallest squad in the division, but we have been a little bit fortunate with injuries.

?Coming into this season we were favourites to go down, so it just shows that without having any stars, as a team unit we have stuck together and shown what can be achieved.

?I think we first started to believe this after we got the club record of eight wins in a row and have carried it from there.?

The final game of Goater?s career will be on Saturday at Roots Hall when former club Bristol City head to Essex.

A Gombey troupe are being flown over as part of the ?Bermuda Blues Bonanza? festivities and the veteran Bermudian will be desperate to get on the scoresheet in the final game of his long career, particularly with the League One title on the line.
