Life?s a Blast for Bascome

The Baltimore Blast celebrate their Major Indoor Soccer League title. David Bascome is seated at right.

David Bascome dedicated his second Major Indoor Soccer League title to best friend Paul Kitson ? before admitting he might hang up his sneakers following Sunday?s dramatic golden goal victory.

Bascome, whose Baltimore Blast edged out the St. Louis Steamers in a dramatic finale at the Savvis Arena in Missouri two days ago, lost his pal before the start of the campaign and has played every indoor match this season in his honour.

And following the triumph in front of more than 13,000 fans on Sunday, Bascome admitted this second title ? following the one he won in his first season with the Maryland club in 2004 ? meant more.

?They say when you win your first, that the second is more special,? said Bascome yesterday after his side had flown back in to Baltimore around midnight the previous night to be greeted by ?tons of fans? at the airport.

?And with my memories of Paul Kitson, this certainly was more special. It?s a great feeling to win the trophy again with this team, and it was a pretty crazy way to win it.

?The way they have the rules, it can make for some exciting finishes to games. We played very well on Friday to win our home leg and it was tough for us on Sunday.

?They came out strongly and went ahead, and although we did battle to try and get back in the game, we were also preparing ourselves for the golden goal.?

In MISL, aggregate goals over the two legs do not count as they do in most other competitions, so if different teams win each of the legs, it goes down to golden goal extra time ? which the Blast had used to get past semi-final opponents Milwaukee Wave the previous week.

?I had one shot blocked in that period but fortunately one of our boys got the first goal and won us the trophy,? continued Bascome, who passed the 1,000 points mark in the first two weeks of the season.

?It?s an exciting way to end things and it creates a great atmosphere, even though it is pretty tense for the players.

?This franchise has won three in four years now and the celebrations were massive for all the guys ? and we are not finished yet.

?There were quite a lot of people at the airport to see us when we got in but there is also a parade through the streets and we are expecting thousands to come out for that.

?We got quite a lot a couple of years ago when we won it and we are looking forward to seeing them out there again.?

And whether or not Bascome joins his Blast team-mates in going after a repeat victory remains up in the air for now.

?That?s the question of the day,? laughed Bascome after being asked if he was going to retire.

?And the answer is we will have to wait and see. My legs still work and I still have the hunger, so from that point of view there is certainly plenty of incentive to continue.

?I have had some talks with the club about going on and I think they want me but it is about deciding whether I am going to carry on.

?I have the pro league starting in Bermuda next year and I am going to be back this summer working on plenty of things to do with that. If the sponsorship comes in and things look like they are running smoothly, then I think I will give it another go but if I am going to need to devote even more time to work on the league at home, then maybe I will be calling it quits.

?I?ll decide once I?ve seen how things are going at home this summer.?
