Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling said if US developer Unified Resorts has the funding to build a hotel on the Par-la-Ville car park then it should show the City the money and move forward.In a statement last night, the Mayor said he was off the Island when Unified principal Ted Adams spoke to The Royal Gazette last month, declaring a long-planned new luxury hotel and condo development in Hamilton could get off the ground this year and that he had the financing in place.“While I was off the Island last week, a member of the City of Hamilton’s Development Committee issued a statement to the media on behalf of the committee, regarding the development of the Par-la-Ville Car Park,” Mr Gosling said.“I would like to provide additional comment to what is already on the record. The writ issued by the City of Hamilton last year is still before the courts and I remain limited by what and how much I can say.“While it is our position that there is no agreement in place between the City of Hamilton and Unified Resorts, I was interested to learn, through your newspaper’s website, that funding is in place to move forward with the project. Our expectations are the same as any potential landlord as we wait for notification from Mr Ted Adams on this matter, whether it be the successful financing or timelines for the project.”Mr Gosling said the City’s concern has always been based on developing the site “in a timely fashion”.“If Mr Adam’s timeline for breaking ground is indeed within four months then there is a lot to be done between now and then,” Mr Gosling said. “Not only are we talking about closing Hamilton’s third largest car park during the multiyear construction phase, the relocation of a large transformer vault which serves a significant part of the city, but also things such as negotiating and finalising a new development and lease agreement.“These matters cannot be progressed simply through press releases to local media. There is much work to be done. We remain committed to development taking place on the Par-la-Ville site and prospective developers should be prepared to show that they can successfully raise the financing and produce concrete timelines for the project. We welcome forward motion as we know a major construction project would be a boost for Bermuda generally and Hamilton, specifically.”The City Development Committee had said Unified had not met its agreed obligations and deadlines, and had failed to even put forward a construction plan for the proposed development.Meanwhile, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, which had attached its St Regis brand to the development in 2009 with much fanfare, would not say whether or not it‘s still involved as the brand partner, saying only: “Due to confidentiality agreements we are unable to comment on the status of this particular project.”Par La Ville Hotel and Residences Ltd is a partnership between Unified Resorts and New York-based Sagewood Investments; local businessman Donal Smith is a partner and shareholder in the company.
