VISITOR'S VIEW
Thank you, Bermuda
November 12, 2002
Dear Sir,
My wife and I have visited Bermuda on vacations many times during the last twenty years, and have stayed at a number of different locations on those visits. This year we came for a visit with two other couples. One couple had been to Bermuda several times, and for the other couple this was a first visit. We rented motorbikes on the third day to show the first-time visitors around the island and, unfortunately, after riding for about half an hour one of our friends fell off his motorbike while making a left turn off South Shore Road. He was lying in the roadway unable to move.
Almost immediately a truck stopped. The driver telephoned for an ambulance and then guarded the road so our friend would not be further injured. About a minute later a nurse driving by stopped and went into action to care for our friend. A few minutes later an EMT on a motorbike also stopped to assist. In the excitement, we did not ask for their names to thank them personally. We would like to do so now by this letter.
Our friend was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he received excellent attention in the emergency room. He had a broken collarbone, several broken ribs and a collapsed lung. Five days later, he is still in the intensive care unit, and his doctor indicates he will be in hospital about four more days. He will not be able to fly for at least another week after being released due to the danger of his lung collapsing again during an airline flight.
The entire staff at Cambridge Beaches, where we are staying, showed their concern for his wife by assisting her in many ways during this very difficult period for her. Kelly Manilla and Corrine Simmons, assistant managers at the hotel have been especially helpful in rearranging airline flights and arranging for our friends' son to fly to Bermuda to be with has mother and help her this week after we have returned home. Because their stay has been extended by about two weeks beyond their expectations, Romana Heeg, manager at Cambridge Beaches, has very kindly arranged for them to remain here for until they can leave Bermuda. This has been a great relief to them.
On behalf of our friends as well as ourselves, we wish to thank all the people who have been so kind and considerate in this difficult period for our friends. In many other locations, they would not have been treated nearly so well. They have already indicated to us that Bermuda will be at the top of their list of desired vacation locations in the future.
