Painter handled jewellery stolen from house where he had worked

A man caught attempting to trade in stolen jewellery was remanded into custody after he admitted receiving more than $13,000 of stolen goods.However the defendant, 24-year-old Pembroke resident Malik Cann, denied actually stealing the items from the owner’s Hamilton Parish home.Magistrates’ Court heard that police were attending Gold Standard, in the Washington Mall, regarding a separate matter when they were told by staff that a customer was attempting to trade in what they suspected was a stolen watch.The officers spoke to Cann, who said the 18 carat gold Rolex watch had belonged to his late father, and that he was trading it in to pay for his son’s day care.The officers seized the watch to check if the item had been reported stolen.On November 3, police later received a report of a quantity of jewellery missing from a Radnor Road home. Among the estimated $15,100 of jewellery stolen from the property was a Rolex watch matching the description of the item taken from Cann.As officers continued to investigate the theft, they learned that Cann had been employed as a painter at the complainant’s home earlier in September.Cann was arrested and Police searched the home he shared with his fiance. They discovered a set of cuff links and a silver cross, both of which had been stolen from the complainant’s home.Together with the watch, a total of $13,650 of stolen jewellery was recovered.Appearing in Magistrates’ Court, Cann pleaded guilty to receiving stolen goods on a date between October 17 and October 23.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered a social inquiry report on Cann. While the defendant asked for bail, telling the court he was working to get his life back on track, but Mr Warner said that the facts of the matter suggested otherwise.He noted that not only does Cann have multiple previous convictions for dishonesty offences, but he was also on probation at the time of the offence for a previous burglary conviction. Mr Warner also remarked that the jewellery was stolen from a home where Cann was employed.Mr Warner remanded Cann into custody until he can be sentenced next month.
