Series champ Drea gets a helping hand
Brian Drea, who won the Senior ‘A’ division title by four points over Mark Hatherley, has given thanks in a large part to his Team Madison team-mate Andrew Steel who won the season’s last race on Sunday. The Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA) Road Race Series concluded without the newly crowned champion, who didn’t compete due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident just days before the race.In one of the closest series finishes in recent years, Drea held a lead of 24 points over Hatherley and needed help in order to secure the title. With 25 points available for a win, 22 points for a second place and 20 for a third-place finish, Hatherley could only manage third on Sunday as Steel grabbed line honours.Tracey Wright took second place ahead of team-mate Hatherley.Drea finished with 166 points, just four ahead of hatherley (162). Darren Glasford took third with 138 points. The newly crowned champion said he was surprised at hoisting the title, admitting he wasn’t aware of the points table until someone pointed it out to him.“The feeling is one of surprise more than anything,” said Drea. “It’s great to be in a team with so many strong riders and don’t think I could have come away with this result if it wasn’t for them.“Unfortunately, I had a motor bike accident last Friday so wasn’t able to compete in the last race due to bruised ribs and a sore back so I had to rely on other Madison riders to come away with a win, which they did with Andrew Steel taking the line with a strong ride.“It was a long season with criteriums, time trials and road races so I wasn’t really aware of the standings until a team member pointed out to me towards the end of the season that I was the current leader so I wasn’t really expecting anything.“However, I knew I was up towards the top of the points series due to some pretty consistent results.”Stephen Tomlinson and Anthony Bartley shared top honours in the Senior ‘B’ division after amassing 151 points with Ricky Smith snr (124) and Norbert Meyer (123) taking second and third respectively.Nigel Godfrey won the Senior ‘C’ category with 166 points, beating out Dnarte Lima (153) and Martin Bolton (147) for the top prize. The Junior ‘A’ division was split between Anthony Smith and Daniel Oatley, who both amassed 191 points, while Alex Pilgrim won the Junior ‘B’ with 188 points and Nicholas Pilgrim claimed the Junior ‘C’ title with 186.The day’s race winners included Chequan Richardson (Adult B), Ian Pilgrim (Adult C), Daniel Oatley (Junior A), Alex Pilgrim (Junior B) and Jayden Ming (Junior C).The final Capital G Time Trial will take place on October 30.
