Man is fined $1,100 for drug and traffic offences
A Southampton man was fined $1,100 after pleading guilty to drugs and traffic charges when he appeared at Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Raymond Simmons, 48, of East Dale Lane, pleaded guilty to five charges of disobeying a traffic sign, having no drivers' licence, possession of drug equipment, disrupting Police and violently resisting arrest.
The court heard that the charges stem from two different incidents.
During an incident on May 12, Simmons was stopped by Police for disobeying a stop sign and was found to be without a drivers' licence.
According to Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke, Simmons was seen on March 9 at 3 p.m. by Police as he made a "hand-to-hand transaction" at St. Monica's Road, Pembroke.
According to Ms Clark, Police made their presence known to Simmons before he was chased through Court Street and Curving Avenue. His car was eventually stopped on Parson's Road where the vehicle was searched. Police found a white rock in the driver's side door and a converted tool, which Simmons admitted was a crack pipe.
When Police informed Simmons he would be arrested under the Misuse of Drugs Act, he reached across the car and smashed the white rock, threw the pipe out of the window and began screaming "kill me, kill me," the court heard.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Simmons $100 each for the charges of disobeying a traffic sign and no drivers' licence.
For possessing the crack pipe, disrupting Police and violently resisting arrest, Mr. Tokunbo imposed a $300 fine for each offence.
Simmons was remanded in custody by Mr Tokunbo for unpaid fines stemming from separate charges.
