Wright scores another perfect ten

Twelve years after his first success in the popular Evian ten mile road race, Tracy Wright collected another victory yesterday - his fourth overall.

And with both his main road race rivals Kavin Smith and Jay Donawa again choosing to sit out a major local event, it might have been Wright's most comfortable yet.

A week ago he won the Lindo's 10K and before that the Five Flat Miles and Butterfield and Vallis 5K.

Yesterday the 38-year-old continued his domination, completing the out and back course in 56 minutes and 30 seconds, more than three minutes ahead of visitor Michael Scythes (59.48) who took the runners-up spot for the second successive year.

Masters runner Devoe Whaley placed third in 1:00.09, Ricky Sousa fourth in 1:00.20 and top senior (over 50) Harry Patchett fifth in 1:00.37.

Wright, a winner of this race in 1990, 1997 and 1998, admitted he wasn't training particularly hard nor was he targeting any particular event in the future.

"I'll run May 24th (Marathon Derby)", he said, "and I'd like to race in the Peachtree 10K (in Atlanta) but I don't have anything particular in mind. I'm just training about three times a week, nothing too serious."

While Wright won the overall race comfortably, the battle for women's honours was much tighter as defending champion Anna Eatherley was chased home by Lynn Patchett.

Eatherley - 12th overall - won in 1:03.46 with Patchett following in 13th place just 26 seconds behind (1:04.12).

Patchett, physiotherapist for the national cricket team during last week's Americas Cup competition in Argentina, had flown back early especially for the race.

Third female was Alison Harvey in 1:08.52.

Carolyn Conway took masters honours in 1:18.54 and Peggy Couper was the first senior in 1:20.59.
