Top Canadians to take on Bermuda's best

Team Pro City Racing will make the long trek to Bermuda tomorrow to compete in the start of the Butterfield Bank Bermuda Grand Prix this weekend.The five-man and four-women team from the Pro City Racing bike shop in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada arrive in Bermuda to challenge local riders for top honoursPro City Racing Bike Shop is a mecca for cyclists and triathletes in Victoria and includes a wealth of experience in their ranks.Regulars in the shop include Ryder Hesjedal, team leader of the Garmin Barracuda cycling team for this year’s Giro D’Italia and 7th in the Tour de France in 2009, Canadian Olympians Geoff Kabush and Sean McGrath, leading mountain biker Max Plaxton, Olympic gold and silver medallist triathlete Simon Whitfield and last year’s stand out professional women’s triathlete Paula Findlay.“We are excited to be sending a team to Bermuda” said Racing owner Bill Fry. “We have heard so much about the Bermuda Grand Prix and our team know that they will have to be at their best against some tough Bermuda teams.”The men’s team leader is James Cameron who in 2011 was first across the line in the 2011 Tour de Victoria and California Gran Fondos and has enjoyed considerable success on the local racing scene in British Columbia.Tom Malczynski and Alex Hui should feature well in Sunday’s criterium as they are explosive riders with strong sprints and have both finished in the top three in 2012 early season criteriums on Vancouver Island.Rounding out the men’s team are Erik Madsen and Troy Woodburn.The women’s team, known as the Pro City Sistas, will include the likes of Danielle Stevens, Sylvia Storry, Jen Dosil and Linda Saunders.Team managers for the team will be Bermuda residents Dave Morrison and Sue Edney who are regular visitors to Victoria and have arranged the team’s visit. Morrison is hoping to continue to forge ties between Bermuda and Victoria having already arranged three triathlon camps in Bermuda coached by Victoria based professional triathletes Jasper Blake and Mike Neill.Victoria residents Max Plaxton, winner of the 2011 US Pro Series Mountain bike series and Canadian 2011 National Champion, and Mel McQuaid, three time XTrra Triathlon World Champion have also visited Bermuda.Racing in the Butterfield Bank Gran Prix gets underway on Friday afternoon in St. George’s Town Square with a short time trial, followed by a road race on Saturday morning starting at Clearwater Beach.The final leg of the Grand Prix will be the criterium in Hamilton on Sunday morning.Full details on the Grand Prix can be found at www.bermudabicycle.org
