Dolphins lead way in age group championships
Dolphins Swim Club were the biggest winners at the Makin' Waves Summer Age Group Championships at the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association (BASA) pool at Saltus over the weekend.
They won a total of five age categories, including a double in the nine to 10 age group, one more than rivals Sharks who ended with four and a double in the 15 and over age bracket.
Harbour won the eight and under age group.
Dolphins' Jude Moseley was tops in the eight and under group, while Megan Lau and Josh Irvine were victorious in the nine to 10 girls and boys' categories.
Denis Pasagic (11-12) and Tadhg O'Shaughnessy (13-14) rounded out the winners for the club.
Barry Hanson, of Dolphins, said: "The summer age groups are, I believe, the most important meet for the great majority of Bermuda swimmers.
"Jude Moseley and Denis Pasagic placed first in all seven of their events . . . Tate Crofts, Evan Farrow, Josh Irvine, Maddie Irvine and Megan Lau also medalled in all seven events they swam.
"A special mention should go to Tadhg O'Shaughnessy who, having been justifiably disqualified for the unusual infraction of wearing two swim suits, went on to a blistering finish to the meet to still win his age group."
The Sharks got group winners via Somer and Sophie Froud in the girls 11 to 12, and 13 to 14, with their double coming from Stephanie Myles and Bermuda Olympian Roy-Allen Burch who won both the girls and boys 15 and over division respectively.
Miriam Smith, junior coach of the Sharks, said: "It was an awesome weekend for the Shark juniors where we had 28 'old' juniors and new Shark swimmers in the meet.
"All the veteran swimmers also made progress. Hannah Marshall, Paige Bruton, Skyler Powell, Holly Bruton, Jada Outerbridge, Olwyn Matthews, Gio Hollis and Sierra Dietz swam all personal bests in their events while Brynn Telenko swam all PBs except in two events and Lucie Gariepy swam two PBs out of three events."
Ashley Irby won Harbour's lone title in the eight and under division.
Harbour coach Richard Goodwin said: " . . . it was another great swimming weekend in diverse weather conditions, which saw two additional records set.
"Once again, Emma Harvey was in the mix, as she broke her own 50 metres butterfly record in the eight and under age group by almost two seconds. Rounding out the records broken was her Harbour team-mate, Ashley Irby, also in the eight and under age group, who set a new mark in the 25 metres backstroke and also was that age groups' High Points Champions.
"I was very pleased with the way all of the Harbour Club's swimmers performed . . . It was great so see them all swimming so well, setting many new personal bests, en route to challenging for the High Points Championships."
New state of the art timing equipment was officially unveiled during the second day of the competition.
The total cost of the six lane scoreboard, touch pads, and computer console was donated by Makin' Waves, Argo Ltd, the Parfitt Family, and BEST Shipping.
On hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony was Rick Correia and Viv Redford from BEST Shipping, Jeremy and Helen Parfitt, Wendy Davis Johnson from Argo Ltd, and Doug Patterson from Makin' Waves.
