Security plans for New Year's Eve announced
Police are working with the Corporation of Hamilton and community groups to ensure Bermudians remain "happy and safe" this New Year's Eve.
At a press conference yesterday, Police Superintendent Martin Weekes spoke of measures Police will be taking to ensure security at the planned New Year celebrations on Front Street.
Mr. Weeks said that the Bermuda Police will not be treating this year's celebrations any different than past New Year's Eve events.
He said that a number of armed patrols will be out due to "heightened tensions" and added that there will be "a lot" of officers on mobile patrol.
Also, Mr. Weekes said that officers were being taken from behind their desks and placed on active duty in an effort to keep crime in check.
Community organiser, Eugene Dean, who is involved in the event said that this year's theme is "unity in the community."
Mr. Dean said that performers for the evening, including Collie Buddz and Troy Anthony, had been chosen due to their broad appeal and to "bring the community together".
The event will start at 6 p.m. on New Years Eve (December 31).

Traditionally the Bermuda New Year has been celebrated with the dropping of the onion in St. George but this year organisers have moved the event to the larger venue of Front Street.
"We recognise that the city is much larger than St. George's but we have been working with the Police and Corporation of Hamilton to ensure that the event will be safe and fun," said Mr. Dean.
Entry to the event is free and there will be free parking at Bulls Head, Par-la-Ville and City Hall car parks.
Public toilets at Albouy's Point and Number One Car Park will be open for use.
