Kenyans eye race double

International Race Weekend.

A little over 12 hours after completing the Front Street Mile, Kenyans Johnstone Kipkoech and James Bungei will be on the start line for Saturday morning's road race.

But first they'll try and dethrone Marcus O'Sullivan on Friday night.

Kipkoech, who won the 1994 Commonwealth Games gold medal in the 3,000 metre steeplechase, has a personal best of 3:56.5 in the road mile and appears to have the legs to keep up with O'Sullivan.

But the biggest threats figure to be Rueban Chesane and Ibrahim Aden.

Aden, 25, is the first Somalian to compete in Race Weekend, and ran a personal best in the 1,500 metres just last year, a 3:36.47 in the Stuttgart Grand Prix.

Chesane is the 1994 Commonwealth Games gold medallist over 1,500m and was second in the 1995 African championships. However, he is now 35-years-old.

Kipkoech was fifth in the Kenya Olympic trials over 5,000 metres and holds a 10K best of 28:03, set in 1994. Bungei, who trains in Albuquerque, has a best mile of 3:54, set in 1995, and also concentrated on the longer distances in 1997.

An American is also making a rare appearance in the mile. Karl Paranya, who is 14 years O'Sullivan's junior is the favourite's training partner in Pennsylvania, was the 1994 US national junior champion over 1,500 and was second in the USATF Nationals last year.

Daniel Hill, an Australian who trains in Atlanta, returns after placing eighth in last year's Bermuda mile. How they line up (Bib number in parentheses) (1) Marcus O'Sullivan Ireland (2) Ibrahim Aden Somalia (3) James Bungei Kenya (4) Rueben Chesane Kenya (5) Daniel Hill Australia (6) Johnstone Kipkoech Kenya (7) Jean-Paul Leandro Gabon (8) Karl Paranya United States (-) Steve Burgess Bermuda
