Pembroke man fined a total of $1,300 for having a scale for drug use
A Pembroke man who admitted possession of a digital scale with cannabis residue on it, received a $1,300 fine in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Jamel Bascome, 25, pleaded guilty to having the scale in connection with the preparation of a controlled drug in his possession on Princess Street on May 29. At the time he was near Dellwood Middle School, considered an increased penalty zone.
Crown counsel Tawana Tannock said officers conducted a search at 13 Princess Street around 2 p.m. that day with a warrant. Ms Tannock said there were three individuals there including the resident of the home, Tamarae Eve.
Bascome was not present. A search warrant was executed with assistance from a sniffer dog.
Officers conducted a fingertip search and seized various items. Among them was the digital scale, which was put into a Police evidence bag.
It later tested positive for cannabis.
Eve, 39, was taken to the Hamilton Police Station. She replied "no comment" to every question that she was asked during a Police interview.
Eve brought Bascome with her to her trial. He told the court the scale belonged to him.
Bascome was then arrested and interviewed where he admitted the offence.
In court yesterday, Bascome said: "I take full responsibility for it. This happened a few months ago. I am currently on probation and I'm doing quite good."
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Bascome $300 for the scale and an additional $1000 for it being in an increased penalty zone.
The Crown offered no evidence on Eve.
