?Our pride?s hurt? ? Romaine
?Embarrassing?, ?wake up call? and ?harsh lesson? were all in a dejected Bermuda skipper Irving Romaine?s post-match comments last night.
Bravely volunteering to give a media interview following the Jamaica-induced humiliation ? coach Gus Logie politely declined a subsequent request ? the batsman was honest about his side?s performance.
?That really was a wake-up call for us,? said Romaine, who managed just one run himself in a pathetic total of 74.
?We learned what it is like when amateurs take on professionals and we really faced the fire from these guys.
?They were at a different level and we have all come away from this with our pride hurt.
?No one likes to be beaten like that and we have to look at things hard to avoid being embarrassed like that again in the World Cup next year.?
The turning point, he said, was the loss of Kwame Tucker to a freak injury which ?disrupted the plan?.
?I?m not making excuses but when you lose an opener to an accident like that and then have to throw people in, well, we just didn?t recover,? he continued.
?One of the biggest disappointments is that the guys who have been producing the runs over the last year or so all came up short.
?And when myself, Lionel, Dean and Janeiro all fail on the same day then you are never going to get a decent total.?
As for the speed at which the Jamaicans knocked up their humiliating victory, Romaine was struggling for words.
?We knew they would come out and beat the ball about whatever our total,? he said.
?These are great players and we saw that first-hand, up close and personal.?
Romaine was then to quick to defend his players against some of the expected criticisms from home ? and the ?weight jokes? made on the field by the post-match announcer.
?We saw today what happens when players work all day and then train for a couple of the hours in the evening,? he added.
?Chris Gayle doesn?t go to work, cricket is their livelihood. They are brought up with nutritionists, with full time training and it shows. They are professionals, we are amateurs and we know we have to work on a lot of things ? including our fitness ? but it is hard to compete with these sort of players with our sort of lives.
?We all saw what the competition at the higher level is like.?
