Bailey's Bay start season off in style

Bailey's Bay answered their doubters in the best possible way over the weekend, winning two games in the opening matches of the Premier Division season.

The Sea Breeze Oval side did something no other top-flight club managed, coming through testing games against Devonshire Rec and PHC, to open up an early lead at the top of the table.

Southampton Rangers and Somerset, who both only played one game, are the other sides with 100 per cent records, after St David's and Willow Cuts enjoyed differing fortunes.

Meanwhile Belco Cup winners PHC were brought back down to earth with a bump, losing two games they ought to have won, while Devonshire Rec also lost both their games.

Bay might have maxiumum points, but were helped by some generous batting by both Rec and PHC. In Saturday's encounter at Devonshire Rec, Bay batted first and posted a defendable total of 183, with Cal Dill topping the scoring with 43, while Ricky Brangman Sr. took four wickets.

The hosts then threw the game away with slow batting and thoughtless shot selection, summed up through Dennis Williams' unexplainable swing for the fences with Rec. needing only five runs from the last three overs.

Playing a needless shot, Williams was caught on the boundary to end the game with Devonshire five runs shy of victory.

Oladapo Fredricks was the topscorer with 36, while Stephen Outerbridge and Dennis Pilgrim both claimed four wickets.

Meanwhile on Sunday, PHC dominated two-thirds of the game, and then failed just when victory was in sight. Bermuda international Kevin Tucker took three for 27, and Cal Waldron 4-31 as Bay were bowled out for 182. Only Irving Romaine's brutal 75 enabled Bay to have a defendable target.

In reply, Fiqre Crockwell and Jason Anderson got their side off to the perfect start, putting on 71 for the first wicket. Crockwell in particular made Bay pay for dropping him first ball as he scored 71 in an innings that bodes well for the upcoming ICC Americas tournament.

The loss of Anderson, who got a leading edge to a slower delivery from Dennis Pilgrim should not have caused PHC too many problems. Dean Richards picked up where Anderson left off, and at 99 for one, PHC needed less than a 100 runs with almost 30 overs remaining.

Richards though got out to a silly shot when he had no need to chase runs, and then Ricardo Brangman got himself run out moments later and PHC had slumped to 99 for three. With Dean Stephens out injured, PHC's middle order lacked any real bite, and they eventually capitulated, finishing 140 all out.

For Kyle Lightbourne's side it was the second time in two days that their failure to re-enforce a promising batting position cost them dearly.

On Saturday against Willow Cuts they were cruising at 156 for two after Jason Anderson (71) and Dean Richards (45) had put on 114 for the second wicket. With 23 overs left, PHC would have been looking at a score closer to 300, and even at 200 for five with ten overs left, they were in a comanding position.

However, the last five wickets fell for just 46 runs, and when they failed to run out opener Ryan Shepherd (43) early on in his innings, Cuts made them pay. After Shepherd's departure, Malachi Jones hit 57 not out to see his side to a three wicket win as they reached 247 for seven with nearly nine overs remaining.

While Jones enjoyed a winning debut for Cuts, his side were unable to build on the win, slipping to a narrow one-wicket defeat at Rangers. Jones' replacement Stefan Dill was the pick of the Rangers bowlers, taking three for 42, as Cuts were dismissed for 217.

In reply, Dion Stovell (68) got Rangers off to a flyer, but wickets fell regularly at the other end, and by the finish they sneaked home at 218 for nine.

St David's bounced back from a four-run defeat at the hands of Somerset on Saturday to thrash Devonshire Rec in the second of their two games. Greg Foggo took six for 23, as Rec were bowled out for 121. That they got into three fiqures was largely down to Kameron Fox (27) and Herbie Bascome (21), who rescued their side from being 59 for eight at one stage.

The home side made short work of chasing down the runs, Landro Minors scored 57 not out, as they knocked them off in 18.5 overs.

In First Division action on Saturday, Cleveland County beat Somerset Bridge by three wickets, while the day's other match saw Young Men's Social Club hammered Flatts by 111 runs.

Social Club then back Saturday's performance up with a 171 run victory over Cleveland thanks to Charlie Marshall stroking 67 to pace the side.

Also on Sunday, St. George's put up the highest score in the early stages of the season, using their match against Warwick as batting practice as they posted 383 on their way to a 343 run win.

Youngster Jonte Smith scored 85.

Warwick could only manage 40 runs in their reply to leave them winless after two games.

Somerset Bridge beat Western Stars by 124 runs in Sunday's final game.
