Islanders eye top flight after fast start
St David’s president Otis Minors wants the club to shatter their reputation as a ‘yo-yo team’ and become an established top-flight force. The East Enders have bounced between the two divisions in recent years but are currently on top of the First Division having won seven out of eight matches. At the weekend, St David’s, who finished bottom of the Premier Division last term, thrashed Ireland Rangers 7-0 and Minors is confident they can continue their rich vein of form.“I’ve been pretty pleased with the way we have started the campaign,” said Minors, who succeeded Aaron Lugo as club president last season.“The guys have been working hard and if they continue to work like they have been we will continue to reap the rewards.”Minors is optimistic about the club’s future and believes there are several talented youngsters who will be ready for first team football in four or five years.“There’s a lot more we need to do to sustain ourselves in the Premier Division but at the moment we’re just focused on getting promoted that’s our number one goal.“Eventually we do want to compete consistently in the top flight.“We have a good little youth programme and if we can get promoted, stay in the top flight for at least four years, then we will be okay.”Despite suffering relegation last season, St David’s managed to retain the bulk of their squad while welcoming a few former players back to the fold.Minors believes teamwork has been the bedrock for their impressive start to the season and praised coach Kameron Fox for steering the club to the top of the table.“We lost one or two guys at the end of last season but it’s pretty much the same team,” said Minors.“We added a few players who have returned to the club and basically it’s still the community guys.“I wouldn’t say anyone has stood out this season; it’s been a team effort and we haven’t been depending on one player.“Goals have come from the whole team and everyone has been contributing to the main cause which is getting promotion.“Our coach Kameron Fox has been doing a great job since he took over at the end of last season and I’m sure we can keep it going.”St David’s have a bye week this weekend and return to action against X’Roads at home on Sunday, December 9.
