Another defeat but lots of friends
The Bermuda Lacrosse team fell to the Spaniards 13-9 in the round robin stage of the ILF World Championships.
Despite a strong effort from Brett Cordey (four goals) and a stellar performance in goal from Steve Velotti, the team was unable to hold a 7-6 half time lead.
Spanish standout Danial Di Lacossa scored five goals in a display of speed and talent that proved too much for the Island side.
The first half was filled with hard hitting action as Mike Totman set the tone early with a number of early devastating hits. In the second minute, the team capitalised on a turnover scoring the first goal of the game.
The rest of the half was back and for with neither team taking more than a two-goal lead. Ernie Theriault scored in the waning moments of the half to put Bermuda up by one going into the half.
The 95 degree heat combined with a number of undisciplined mistakes seemed to take the steam out of Team Bermuda who only scored twice in the second half.
Bermuda had a number of opportunities early in the third quarter but were continually denied by Spanish Goaltender Danial Gonzaliz and the post.
The loss drops the team to 0-3 going into the final round robin game against Latvia. As a result, the team will likely face New Zealand or South Korea tomorrow in the first game of the play-offs.
The Island team, however, continues to be the talk of the tournament.
From being the best dressed team at the opening ceremonies (Red Bermuda shorts, blue blazers, Bermuda flag lapel pin) to being the most personable, everyone in London is talking about Team Bermuda.
A local restaurant has picked up on the team's following and held a picture and autograph session last night.
As a result, The International Lacrosse Federation have offered to send coaches and equipment to the Island in an effort to grow the sport within the local schools.
Free monthly clinics are being planned for later this year.
