CRUMBLING HISTORY

Crumbling: One of the Island’s few remaining wooden houses is shown slowly crumbling on a Lighthouse Road, St David’s Island property. Painted yellow, green and red at various times, over the years, the building has horizontal lapboard exteriors and a concrete on corrugated iron sheeting and has withstood many hurricanes and gales over the years. The house has a veranda overlooking the road and a above groundwater tank. Educator and historian Dale Butler author of the 2006 book, “Wooden Houses of Bermuda” said: “Since completing the book a number of them have been demolished to make way for new accommodations. Because of their age and the type of wood they were made from, deterioration has set in to many. The owners should be commended for trying to keep them in shape but I fear that due to cost and time they will all disappear.”
