Trio vie for soccer captaincy
picking his national football captain.
The Bermuda coach says there are at least three candidates who fit the bill as leaders of the nation.
In the past, Devonshire Colts stopper Shannon Burgess has been the automatic first choice as captain, but Trott, who took over the post at the start of March, says this is a whole new beginning.
While saying that Burgess is still very much part of his plans, the coach believes there are two other players who could also fill the role.
On the recent tour to Tennessee, where Bermuda played games against the Nashville Metros of the US A League and an Hispanic All-Star team, Trott experimented by giving North Village's Kentoine Jennings and Somerset's Karl Roberts the captain's armband.
"I told them at the very first team meeting that this was a new beginning and that was in no way, shape or form saying that Shannon Burgess wasn't going to be the captain eventually of this team when it came to playing international matches,'' Trott said.
"I made it very clear to them. I said there were two other members who I considered very senior in the team who I felt deserved to have the opportunity of being looked at in the captain's role and see how the team responded to them and how they responded to being the leader. That was Kentoine in the first game and Karl Roberts in the second game.'' Bermuda went down 2-0 against the Metros despite making much of the running and enjoyed a 4-1 romp over the Hispanic side.
Reflecting on the performances of Jennings and Roberts, Trott said: "I thought both of them led from the front. As a matter of fact they probably made my job a little more difficult in that all three guys have very good leadership qualities.'' The coach stressed that the job of captain was not the only one where there were potential vacancies.
Despite having a starting 11 in mind, Trott said there were still opportunities for other Island players to stake a claim.
"I would say in our minds there is a solid nucleus. But there are also people that I still want to look at,'' he said.
"There are number of players -- guys like Nakia Smith, Anthony Thomas from Wolves, the Belboda brothers from Devonshire Colts, Keenan Burchall, Aljame Zuill, Kevin Jennings. These are people that I still think can fit into this equation and help to make us a better team.
"That is not taking anything away from the players we have. I just think that the bigger the pool of players we have who can do the job for us the better off we will be.'' Trott said one of the key ingredients of the new regime was regular matches.
And he said plans were already in hand to bring over one of the Major Soccer League's (MLS) premier teams.
"I know tentatively we are looking at the Miami Fusion in June. That all depends whether they have to play in a US Cup game or some cup competion and they may have to play on the day they originally intended to come to Bermuda,'' he said. "We also received a very good offer to go to the Des Moines Menace in Iowa and I would really like to see that happen for sure.''
