St. David's get replay after bottle incident
St. David's president Aaron Lugo believes Bermuda Football Association's (BFA) decision to uphold the club's appeal against awarding BAA maximum points for the abandoned match between the two teams was "the fairest thing to do".
The East Enders will now have the chance to earn three points against lowly BAA after the BFA ordered the First Division game to be replayed.
Referee Wendy Woodley cut last month's game short when a plastic bottle was thrown onto the BAA Field pitch with little more than five minutes of the match remaining, and with St. David's leading 4-0.
A BFA probe concluded the act was committed by a supporter "sympathetic" with St. David's and awarded BAA the points and a score of 3-0.
But the BFA executive council have now altered their stance because the match was abandoned prior to the amount of time required to constitute a match.
League rules stipulate if a match is abandoned up to 75 minutes of play the match shall be replayed in its entirety.
Lugo said he was delighted the league leaders' appeal had been upheld.
"We're obviously excited the BFA accepted and upheld our appeal," said Lugo. "We thought that was the fairest thing to do.
"Some of our players have had different things to say in reference to the game. Some say the game was pretty much over so why not give us the points, and some are saying since that game they (BAA) have won a few matches and will bemore of a threat.
"No matter what has been said we will approach this match like it's our last of the season and have to win to go up.
"We will enter the game with the same type of respect as if we had never played the first game."
The decision puts the Islanders firmly in the driver's seat in the race for the league title.
Before the decision to replay the match, St. David's were level on points with rivals St. George's and Robin Hood, although they have a vastly superior goal difference.
With their league win on Tuesday night, a 4-0 triumph over Prospect United, St.David's are now three points clear with a game in hand over Hood (the replayed match against BAA) and level on games played with St. George's.
The tide has seemingly turned in the favour of Lugo's men, and the president insists that it is business as usual for the side, who are focussing on winning the division rather then just getting promoted.
"We have the same mentality in that each game we play, we have to find ways to get points regardless of who we play," he said.
"Our main objective is not just to be promoted, but to win the league.
"We're tired of coming second and getting promoted, we want to win the league, that's our goal."
St. David's scored all of their goals in the first half against Prospect at Devonshire Rec. through Otis Minors, Fiqre Crockwell, Landro Minors and an own goal.
Also on Tuesday night at the Rec. Young Men's Social Club drew 1-1 with MR Onions.
Leonard Raynor scored for YMSC while Kevin Ronaldson was on target for Onions.
