Michael Fahy new member of the Senate

United Bermuda Party chairman Michael Fahy is to join the Senate – replacing Charlie Swan who resigned last month to contest the Southampton West Central by-election.

UBP leader Kim Swan described the 33-year-old Mr. Fahy as intelligent, hard-working and someone who will "hit the ground running".

He added: "Michael is deeply committed to making sure the people of Bermuda get the best government possible and I know he will do that from his new posting in the Senate."

Mr. Fahy, a lawyer, will have Shadow Minister responsibilities for telecommunications, transportation and energy.

He said: "I am looking forward to working with my new Senate colleagues Michael Dunkley and Jeanne Atherden, in the serious business of holding this government to account."

Senate leader Michael Dunkley takes on the Tourism brief while keeping Public Safety.

Mr. Swan added: "I wanted to bring Michael's business acumen to Bermuda tourism because it needs a steady, more business-oriented approach."

In other moves in the Shadow Cabinet, Shawn Crockwell will speak on Labour and Immigration in the House. Mr. Swan said: "He is very disciplined in soliciting and accurately reflecting the views and concerns of specific segments of our society, as well as working closely with his colleagues.

"These are skills that can be used to achieve better public policy in labour relations, which are in very poor shape across the island, and the very sensitive area of immigration."

John Barritt is now tasked with arguing the case for more open Government.

Mr. Swan said: "I am giving him the widest latitude possible to comment on the vitally important need to provide Bermuda with more open, transparent, accountable and effective government."
