Only experts are hired to dispense medical advice at the Phoenix

Cheery, frank, Margaret Madeiros plays down her work as a pharmacist at the Phoenix Centre on Reid Street, but her colleagues are quick to inform of all she has done. An award-winning professional, she has worked in the Phoenix for 28 years -- first across the street and, since 1990, in Reid Hall. "I've seen the store grow from when it was mainly a drugstore on the other side of the road,'' she explained. "Today it looks nothing like that store of the past, or even the store of last year, the aisles are more spacious, the the lighting is better and there's a much greater selection of products available.'' One of 17 pharmacists, including vice president of the Phoenix Drug Store, Edmina Bradshaw, Mrs. Madeiros said that most customers seem pleased with all the recent changes, with many having actually expressed that to her. And for her part, she feels more accessible to her customers as part of the changes to the main floor of the Phoenix Centre saw the lowering of the pharmacist counter.

"Over the years, I have established a rapport with many of our longterm customers,'' she said. "We draw a lot of regulars from near-by Hamilton businessess and they eventually become repeat customers, so I know what their concerns are and am able to assist them more quickly that those people who I don't usually see or are here for the first time, and the regulars appreciate that I think.''
