Rugby duo make debuts for Windies

Two locals will make their debut for the West Indies this weekend at the Carib Rugby Sevens tournament in Trinidad.

Student Kris Furbert, 19, who plays for the Mariners and Irish accountant Tom Healy, 28, of the Renegades, join Bobby Hurdle and Devon Woosede in a 24-man squad which will be whittled down to 12 after tournament — with the lucky dozen set to compete at the prestigious IRB Sevens World Series in San Diego, California next February.

Furbert has just completed a two-year stint at Cranbrook school in Kent, England where the number eight was in the first XV for both years in the UK.

Healy, meanwhile, hails from Cork in the Republic of Ireland but qualifies to represent the Island and the region having lived here for three years.

The best-known name out of the four is undoubtedly Hurdle, however, who is the brother of national cricket team seamer Kevin Hurdle.

The towering national team skipper has been one of the most prominent names in local rugby for several years now and has captained the West Indies at international sevens and 15s tournaments in the past.

The final West Indies squad for the World Series will be announced in the immediate aftermath of the Carib Sevens.
