Police probe shooting on Boaz Island on Sunday night
A 31-year-old man is believed to be the intended target of a shooting in Somerset following Sunday's Non-Mariners race.
According to Police, the victim was on a jet ski near a shallow water jetty next to the Boaz Island Service Station when he was fired upon. According to Police, he was able to ride away without being shot, and escaped without injury.
A witness said the alleged gunman was on a public slip near the gas station as he took aim. "It was a guy on a jet ski in the water and he got shot at. The gun misfired. That was it," the man said.
Police were called to the scene around 7.40 p.m.
"Officers attended the area; however at that time nothing was found to substantiate the report," a spokesperson stated. "It is now believed that a firearm was discharged at the victim. Thankfully, he did not receive any injuries, but was shaken by the ordeal."
The spokesman said that Police are now taking statements and studying CCTV footage from the area. Officers are looking specifically for two offenders and a third man who may have been involved. Two suspects were described as black males wearing dark coloured helmets with tinted visors, travelling on a blue motorcycle. Both were wearing light coloured jeans and one wore a red shirt.
The third person was described as a black male wearing a white sleeveless vest and travelling on a grey motorcycle resembling an old Honda Scoopy.
Calling for witnesses to come forward, Assistant Commissioner of Police David Mirfield said: "We are aware that there were a number of people in the area at the time of the shooting and would urge them to come forward.
"If anyone is unsure, frightened or vulnerable, but believes they have information on this, or any other firearms incident, they must come forward and talk to the Police in confidence. There will be no pressure to do anything they are not comfortable with, and we will explain what we can provide."
Meanwhile, after reports of a firearm at Penno's Wharf in St. George's, Police were not able to find the gun. Officers searched the cruise ship terminal in St. George's yesterday afternoon and questioned a person off the cruise ship Veendam following reports of the weapon.
The full-scale investigation involved officers from multiple units including the Serious Crime Unit, Armed Response Vehicles and the Marine Unit. A spokesperson issued a statement today: "Extensive inquires were made and the Bermuda Police Service is satisfied that the presence of a weapon could not be verified. The Bermuda Police Service appreciates the cooperation of all those who were inconvenienced as a result of the operation."
