Events unveiled for social worker awareness month

Claudette Fleming

March will be dedicated to the work of social workers on the Island, beginning with a fair next week.

Launching the awareness month is The Bermuda National Association of Social Workers, a group dedicated to promoting excellence of social work practice on the Island, with the first event taking place on Monday.

Since the group was formed in 2006, it has been working to promote and regulate the profession and March provides a chance to educate the public.

At the event, Minister of Social Rehabilitation and Culture Dale Butler will read a proclamation opening the fair and the month. The fair is from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Anglican Cathedral Hall.

The fair will feature two guest speakers, with Tawanna Wedderburn speaking at noon on "The Power of the Brain — Parenting a Preteen in the 21st Century" and Age Concern executive director Claudette Fleming speaking at 1 p.m. on "The Power to Impact — The Many Faces of Social Work".

During March there will also be an information booth at the City Market on March 8, the organisation will help Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda with their annual Kite Day, a family bowling night will be held and the social worker of the year will be selected.

The Bermuda National Association of Social Workers is inviting all helping professionals and the public to celebrate the national Social Work Month with them.
