Hamilton handbag thief remanded into custody until trial

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3: An unemployed St. George’s man admitted trying to snatch handbags off two women in separate incidents in Hamilton.

Tyneko Trott, 25, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court today, to two counts of attempted robbery.

Senior Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney said at 5.10pm last Tuesday, Julia Smatt was walking on Church Street in front of the General Post Office when Trott walked towards her and grabbed the black handbag on her right shoulder.

She pushed him away and Trott made another grab for the bag but was unsuccessful. He walked away as Ms Smatt called police.

Just 15 minutes later, Chandra Murphy-White was walking on Parliament Street outside the Hamilton Pharmacy when she felt someone behind her grab the handbag on her left shoulder.

Trott could not pull the bag free and came around to the front of Ms Murphy-White. She maintained her grip on the bag and during the struggle received a bruise to her left bicep, as well as a cut finger. Again, Trott ran away.

Both women provided a description to police. Trott was later arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery.

The court heard today that Trott had been given a 12-month conditional discharge in February, which was still in effect.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered a Social Inquiry Report, a substance abuse report and psychological report.

Trott was remanded into custody until his trial on February 3.
