B League a matter of haves and have-nots

The distance between the teams at the top of the Women's B league and those at the bottom widened over the as lead teams Cardinals and Swallows each notched impressive shut-outs.

Swallows knocked back Ravens 3-0 on Saturday for the first of two victories.

A strike by Karen Turner from the edge of the circle was deflected into goal by a defender's stick for Swallows' first goal of the year. Sandy Cram then capitalised on a short corner from the left post to make it 2-0.

Ravens continued to fight with Liz Quarterly grabbing a 16-yard hit and dribbling into the circle for a shot on goal, only to be denied by the Swallows' keeper.

Krista Donnelly then scored to seal Swallows' win.

Swallows also downed Orioles 5-0 on Sunday. Orioles held their opponents at bay for 10 minutes before Karen Campbell netted two zingers in five minutes. Jenny Burrell took it to 3-0 and the goals still kept coming.

Burrell netted a second and Mel Burns also found the net to end it 5-0.

Cardinals, however, kept up their challenge as they wiped out Bluebirds 5-0.

Erica Frith opened the scoring after three minutes and Tania Theriault and Lakae Dill quickly followed with two more goals.

Cardinals relaxed slightly, allowing Bluebirds to try and work their way back into the match.

But Theriault swept the ball in at the post for her second of the day and Lise Baldwin put the game away with a great shot from the top of the circle.

Canaries earned the fourth shut-out of the weekend, downing Swifts 3-0.

Canaries' Jane Edgett found the back of the net first. Nelleke Hollis then converted a penalty stroke and, although Swifts fought hard, Rhiannon Wigley sealed the win.

Cardinals and Bluebirds fought to a 1-1 draw in A league play. Both teams attacked well despite slippery conditions.

Ana Anton found the net first for Cards after scrappy Bluebird defending. But Blues answered with a goal 10 minutes later.

Canaries downed Swifts 1-0 in the other A game. Late in the second half, Mary Ellen Jackson pushed in a rebound off the keeper's pads for the only goal of the game. Jennah Robinson played well in goal for Swifts to keep the score low.

In Men's action, Rebels continued pursuit of the title with a 4-0 win over BCS Panthers.

Jamal Burgess beat an initial save by Panthers' keeper Kevin Hill to score early and David Gutteridge took it to 2-0 when left unmarked in the circle.

Rebels weathered a temporary suspension before Simon Farrington supplied Mark Ray for the third goal.

And Bert Rodney's tireless play paid off for Rebels' final goal.

Upstarts beat Police Polecats 3-2 with help from David Dunwoody, who played his final game.

Dunwoody struck a bullet of a goal from a short corner to get started. Seconds later Fyfe added another and Murphy scored again in the second half. Not giving up, Police managed to pull back two goals, but it was not enough.
