Cup Match bowlers hit lanes
and St. George's fans, will take place on Thursday evening at Warwick Lanes, starting at 7.30.
The popular event has an unusual format as competitors will be hitting sixes and fours, even half centuries and centuries. As well as in the traditional game of cricket, participants can also be bowled, run out, caught or trapped lbw...all of this in an atmosphere very much like that at the Cup Match classic.
There will also be calypso music playing while competition is going on and customary Cup Match food and beverages will be on sale. There will also be the customary jeers and cheers associated with the performances of the team and individual members. One notable absentee will be the traditional crown and anchor tables.
Participants are encouraged to wear the colours of the team they will be representing, which will help to identify them on the lanes. There will be a prize presentation at the conclusion of three innings and trophies presented to the winning team.
Somerset are understood to be looking for a new captain after four defeats in the past five years, while St. George's captain Betty Lespere has already started to prepare her team.
Tournament organiser Lionel Dowling is credited for the birth of this unusual tournament which every year falls just short of a complete sellout with between 90 and 100 bowlers.
However, this year Dowling is expecting a sellout crowd. Entries will be accepted from 6.30 for the 7.30 start at an entry fee of $10 per bowler.
The formula for the tournament is that a game is an innings, a gutter-ball is a duck, a 7-10 split is clean bowled, an open 10th frame is caught and an lbw is leaving a 1-5 sleeper unconverted. Two consecutive strikes is a four, three a six, four a half-century and five a century.
