DeCosta wins harness thriller
Nick DeCosta swept to victory in harness racing's Eurocar Champion of Champions meet at Vesey Street over the weekend after an electrifying opening race.
DeCosta, driving GV Colonel Spence, capped off a good season to win in a very quick 1:05.1 - the fastest time of the season.
He also placed third in the second heat to take the title from reigning champion Eddie Roque, who was driving Bowtie's Pocket Watch.
"It all came down to the draw," said DeCosta. "Although I was on the rail, the race could have still gone either way as Eddie could have run two consistent times.
"My initial strategy was to record the possible fastest time that I could because in the worse scenario I could have recorded a slower time in the second heat.
"I needed a good time in the first heat so that my average time would be quite fast. That's how I went about it . . . it definitely wasn't easy!"
Roque placed second with an average time of 1:06.25, behind DeCosta's average of 1:06.15.
"Racing was good on Saturday, I encountered no difficulties," said Roque. "But on Sunday I had a harness break during practice and wasn't able to warm up properly.
"Therefore, when it came time to race I didn't put down the time I should have put down in the first heat and in the end it cost me the race as I was beaten by a fifth of a second . . . but that's racing."
However, Roque was full of praise for the victor.
"It (the championship) couldn't have gone to a better person. Nick is a nice guy," he said. "We have competed against each other for many years now and I love to race against him more than any other driver on that track. We both know where we stand and we always finish the race with a smile whether we win or lose."
Meanwhile, Chris Wells driving Tell Me About It, came in third among the Island's nine fastest ponies.
In the process, Wells also recorded the fastest time for a gelding this season when he crossed the line in 1:07.
Reserve honours went to Michael Roberts' Ponder Babe followed by Shady's Liberty and Nick DeCosta and Melody Time driven by Bobby DeGraff.
Consolation honours went to Gold Mate and Joe Correia while Shamrock Formal Attire with Chris Roque at the helm and Brittany Gold and Aaron Madeiros rounded off the podium finishers.
