Squash team eye a repeat

Bermuda's squash team goes into the final day of the 38th annual Rosebowl tournament in Nassau, unbeaten and looking on course to retain their title as overall champions .

Despite the fact the Island team are handicapped by not sending a Ladies team, the Men's A and B teams and Veterans teams have won all their matches, although the Veteran's match against the Bahamas was a close call.

The A team have not dropped a game in their two fixtures.

On Thursday evening they defeated Bahamas 5-0, every player winning 3-0, and yesterday morning they repeated this feat against Jamaica.

This morning they face what is likely to be their toughest test, when they play the Cayman Islands.

The Men's B team overcame the Bahamas 4-1 on Thursday evening, with only an ailing Jan Brewer losing to tough opposition. Stephen Young at No.5 got the team off to a good start with a gutsy 3-2 win over Chris Albury, claiming the fifth game 9-7. No.4 Steven Smith played well in his first Rosebowl appearance to defeat Adrian Burrowes 3-1, and Mel Caines wrapped up the tie with a good 3-2 victory over established player Troy Rahming. Richard Brewer then beat Kirk McKenzie 3-0, and Jan Brewer was edged 3-1 by Henio Podlewski in the final match.

Yesterday, Bermuda Men's B registered a walkover against the Jamaicans who did not field a team.

Things were a lot tighter in the Veteran's camp on Thursday.

First up, No.5 Liz Martin, looked shaky as she conceded the first game against Barbara Albury 9-5, but she put her nerves behind her and played confidently and decisively to take the next three games 9-6, 9-6 and 9-1 in 31 minutes.

At No.4, Denise Kyme was seriously stronger than Bahamian Lisa Fields and stamped her authority on the match winning it 9-1, 9-2, 9-1.

At 2-0 up things were looking good for Bermuda. However, No.1 Norman Furtado struggled against Bahamian Veteran's champion Stanley Pratt in the first two games, losing 9-2, 9-5. The third game was a see-saw event with Pratt obviously tiring, yet after exchanging service at seven-all he took the match 9-7 in the third.

At No.2, John Stout never got going against Ezra Knowles losing 3-0 in short order.

With the fixture tied at two-all, No.3 Colin Alexander, a former Bermuda Closed champion returning to Rosebowl competition after an injury-forced layoff, was altogether too strong for Bahamian Tim Pascoe winning 3-0. Pascoe struggled against the vastly experienced Alexander's accurate lob and drop game. This gave the tie to the Bermuda team.

Jamaica conceded yesterday's Veteran's tie as they were unable to field a complete team.

Bermuda are hoping to retain the Rosebowl trophy for the best team overall with a solid performance against Cayman today. This is likely to be a challenging event with the Cayman Islands fielding strong Mens A and B and veterans teams.

The tournament finishes this afternoon.
