Man claims he only broke into drug store because he was drunk

A St. George's man admitted breaking into Robertson's Drug Store in the town, but said he only did so because he was drunk.

Tyneko Trott, 24, of Southside Road, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to breaking into the drugstore on Christmas Eve and giving Police false information after he had been arrested.

According to Crown counsel Larissa Burgess, around 3.40 a.m. on December 24, Police responded to an alarm at the St. George's drugstore and, when they arrived, they noticed a shattered pane of glass.

Looking through the broken window, Police saw Trott inside carrying cartons of cigarettes and ordered him to stay where he was. A search of his pockets found $550 of merchandise from the store, including cigarettes, lighters and body spray.

When questioned, Trott gave his correct birthday, but told Police that his name was "Tyrone Raynor."

Only after a search through the Police database discovered no such person did Trott give his real name.

Duty defence counsel Larry Mussenden told the court that Trott only broke into the drugstore because he had been drinking, and suggested to Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that he should be given some leniency because he gave his actual birth date.

"He also gave the first letter of his first name," Mr. Tokunbo responded. "Should I also give him credit for that too?"

Trott apologised to the court, saying: "If I wasn't under the influence, I wouldn't have done it. I ain't really been in all that much trouble at all."

Mr. Tokunbo ordered a social inquiry report on Mr. Trott and released him on $2,000 bail. Trott will return for sentencing on February 12.
