Artists in the latest Bermuda Arts Centre in Dockyard show have used everything from banana leaves and bark to fabric, beads and sea glass to make their creations.The juried crafts show ‘Art of Craft 3’ opens Sunday and includes a range of crafts including ceramics, jewellery, baskets, wood turning, wood carving, furniture, fabrics and glass.“We are really excited about this year’s show,” said gallery administrator Heidi Cowen. “We have new crafters that have entered, and so we are gearing up for the biggest show ever.”Fibre artist Kathryn Garcia will display a range of techniques including silk dying, quilting and mosaics.“I recently took classes with Ronnie Chameau and am thrilled to be able to display a banana leaf doll and Bermuda onion basket,” Ms Garcia said. “I was inspired to become a fibre artist after seeing my mother knit Argyle socks and Irish sweaters.”However, some of the artists have turned to more modern methods to help them with their crafting.For example, Carole Havercroft, a graphic designer of more than 25 years will exhibit digital art.On show will be two pieces displaying what she calls ‘Bermuda Critters’ parrotfish and longtails.“I’m submitting one of each as hanging art but they are really tea towels and should be used as such,” she said. “My designs are printed onto spools of linen-cotton fabric and I cut and sew them to size.“I started off doing animal or pet portraits and wanted to expand to a wider market.“And [because of] my love for animals and our ocean it felt natural to go to the birds and the fish.“I have drawn lizards, butterflies, turtles and more which I sell as cards. As I’ve only really started with the fabric side for my art I am looking forward to a lot of different adventures in the next few years.”Also on display: Handmade ceramics and jewellery by Suzie Lowe; quilts and jewellery by Geralyn Counsell; objects created out of sea glass, beads and other materials by Jan Quinn; banana dolls and scenes created using banana tree bark by Ronnie Chameau.The show ends on April 20.
