Gunmen who shot boy, 16, were after his brother, says grandmother

Search: Police last night raided the home of the teenage victim of Wednesday evening's shooting, just hours after the 16-year-old had been released from hospital following treatment to his injuries. He is seen here handcuffed in the yard of his home, along with a friend, as Police officers searched the premises.

The bullet that hit the 16-year-old victim in Wednesday's double shooting was meant for his elder brother, according to the victim's grandmother.

The teenager was on the back of a motorcycle ridden by his mother's 22-year-old boyfriend when the shooter - also on a bike with another man – opened fire.

Both the 16-year-old and the 22-year-old were wounded in the attack shortly before 11 p.m. at the junction of Friswell's Road and Middle Terrace in Devonshire.

The pair were visiting the area to pick up the teenager's elder brother, aged 17, from a house nearby.

The elder brother was arrested earlier this year in connection with two previous shootings, but has not been charged.

According to the brothers' grandmother, a television news report about those arrests made the elder brother a target and led to Wednesday night's attack.

"They (the shooters) were waiting in an alleyway cutting for (the elder brother) to come out but his younger brother and mother's boyfriend came down the alleyway and they shot at them," she said.

"My younger grandson saw the bike and ran down an embankment cliff into a yard. We felt they were trying to get (the elder brother), we heard a tip that they wanted him over the weekend."

The 16-year-old was treated in hospital for an injury to his upper body before being discharged early yesterday evening. The 22-year-old remained in hospital, where he was listed as being in a stable condition on a general ward.

This newspaper has respected the family's request not to print the names of the injured teenager, his elder brother, or the other injured man. The Police have confirmed the shooting appears to be gang-related and the grandmother said her family is scared.

Just hours after the 16-year-old victim was released from hospital, armed Police raided the family home in Pembroke looking for drugs. The injured teenager and his friend were detained in the yard, with their hands cuffed, for more than an hour while the home was searched.

The 61-year-old grandmother turned up at the scene of the raid and complained to media representatives about the Police behaviour towards the 16-year-old.

"He was supposed to take tests today in school but he got shot last night," she said. "Now they are arresting him. He is sitting on the ground and he has bullet wounds."

She added: "He doesn't smoke, he's at school, but they're treating him like a criminal and he just got shot and he's traumatised. We have human rights. This isn't right."

Neither of the young men handcuffed by the Police were arrested in the end, as the officers found no drugs at the residence.

Acting Superintendent Nicholas Pedro later defended the raid.

"The Bermuda Police Service executed a search warrant issued by a Magistrate after receiving credible information that illegal drugs were present at the residence," he said.

"The residence was lawfully searched, however no illegal drugs were found at that time and as a result no one was taken into custody. The Bermuda Police Service has an obligation to follow up credible information it receives."

Both the 16-year-old and his 17-year-old brother are currently facing charges - along with their 37-year-old mother and two other men - over cannabis possession allegations.

The charges stem from a previous Police raid at a different venue earlier this year. All five maintain their innocence, are on bail, and are due to stand trial at Magistrates' Court in August.

The family home in Pembroke was also raided last month by armed Police who were investigating a report there could be a firearm there. Four people were arrested - including the 16-year-old - at that time.

However, his grandmother said he is an innocent teenager who is not associated with drugs or violence - and his name has been cleared each time he's been investigated.

"I feel it's harassment," she said last night.
