Trust hires executive director with tourism ties
The Bermuda National Trust has hired a new executive director with strong ties to the tourism industry.
CEO of Bermuda Incentives and Conventions (BIC) Derek Morris will leave that company to take over the reins at the National Trust.
The group?s President Bill Holmes said: ?When we began our search for a Director, the Trust was committed to finding an individual that not only shared our belief in the necessity of protecting Bermuda?s environment and traditions but who possessed the strong business skills needed in today?s world.?
The appointment of a tourism industry expert comes as there?s a growing public struggle between revitalising tourism with new properties and protecting the environment.
?With my work experience,? said Mr. Morris, ?and my dedication to the country I believe I can make a major contribution to the debate on how we continue to develop our Island without destroying its incredible natural beauty and its intriguing cultural heritage.?
BIC, Mr. Morris? current employer, is most recognised for its cruises and parties on Hawkins Island.
It also runs a convention business that handles travel arrangements for groups.
Among Mr. Morris? responsibilities in his new role will be attracting tourists to the National Trust?s museums and nature reserves.
