Crash victim Mayho is presented with state-of-the-art bike

When top junior rider Dominique Mayho crashed out of the Sinclair Packwood Memorial Road Race last month, it was not only his dreams of winning the prestigious local race that were broken, but also his racing bike.

And while next year he will get another chance, his bike will not after it was completely broken in half on impact when he struck a wall on Harbour Road in the wet treacherous conditions.

It was the bike former professional cyclist, Elliot Hubbard, rode in his last season as a full-time rider, which Mayho had inherited as part of the schools cycling programme formed by Bicycle Association president Peter Dunne.

When it came to finding a replacement for the talented youngster, whose mother recently died of cancer, it became a true team effort.

On Wednesday, the Berkeley Institute student was presented with a brand new Cannondale racing bike courtesy of Greg Hopkins and Paulo Medeiros of Team Winers Edge, and fully equipped with carbon fibre competition wheels that Mayho's own team, Team Madison, bought for him.

Hopkins said: "Dom is a very talented youngster who we all believe has tremendous potential. He is extremely dedicated and clearly has a deep passion for the sport. On top of that, whilst confident, he has a great personality and is a real team player, he has the whole package.

"We were happy to join with Team Madison to help them, get Dom on the road with his own bike, he deserves it. He has had a tough year losing his mother to cancer, but he has tremendous family support, especially his dad who is at every event Dom does and he has strong team support and guidance from Phil Trussell and his team-mates.

Mayo won won his first Category 'A' race in Hamilton two weeks' ago on another borrowed bike.
