Island quartet qualify for Caribs

Mark Hatherely, Darren Glasford, Dominique Mayho and Nicole Mitchell all reached the minimum qualifying standard for this year’s Caribbean Cycling Championships in Vermont over the weekend.In order to reach the standard, the foursome had to finish in the top half of the first stage of the Killington Stage Race. And they did just that to achieve their primary objective.Hatherley finished 15th in Saturday’s 72-mile men’s category three road race and was followed by Winner’s Edge team-mate Glasford and Madison rider Mayho who finished 17th and 27th respectively.All three riders finished in the second group that was clocked at 3:21.16Not to be outdone, Mitchell made the qualifying standard for October’s Caribbean Championships in Antigua after placing ninth in the 53-mile women’s category one, two road race.Mitchell finished in the lead pack that came in in 2:36.28.Commenting on the group’s qualifying achievement, Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA) president Peter Dunne said: “I’m pleased to see the results of yesterday’s (Saturday’s) first stage of the Killington Stage Race, seeing that our best local riders have made the effort to meet our standard this far out from the Caribbean Cycling Championships.“Not only are they gaining valuable experience but doing this as a group allows them to bond as potential team-mates.”Meanwhile, competing for personal pride in Vermont were Anthony Smith, Che-Quan Richardson, Glenn Franklin and Heather Roque.Smith and Richardson finished fifth and 39th in the 53-mile men’s category four road race while Franklin placed sixth in the men’s 60 plus category.Roque finished 44th in the 37-mile women’s category three, four road race.The Bermuda riders were also in action during yesterday’s 11-mile time trial.Glasford (28:55.81) was 63rd in the men’s category three followed by Mayho (30:24.16) and Hatherley (30:29.13).Mitchell placed 24th in the women’s category one, two in a time of 30:07.50.Richardson (31:18.12) and Smith (38:54.60) finished 65th and 68th in the men’s category four time trial.Franklin (28:42.31) was fifth in the men’s 60-plus while Roque (32:28.89) finished 42nd in the women’s category three, four.The three-day Killington event concludes today with the Champion System Road Race.
