Boss Thompson delighted with victory

Interviewing Kenny Thompson at the National Sports Centre is becoming increasingly difficult due to his ever-expanding vocal band of supporters.

Another win and another chorus of ?Kenny Thompson?s Bermy Army? forced the smiling Thompson to shout his thoughts to following a second highly-satisfying victory in three days against Central American opposition.

?We can already feel a lot better going into the El Salvador games,? said Thompson after his side?s 2-1 victory which again owed much to an overseas professional forward.

?The more matches we play, the better and I think we have learnt a lot again from this game.

?I am very happy with the result, but things didn?t look too good at the start.

?In the first half we were awful. It is as simple as that. But I was very pleased with the way we played after half-time. We came out very brightly and it was important that we got that early goal.?

But once 2-0 up, Thompson wasn?t overjoyed with the way his side let the opposition back into the game courtesy of Dwayne (Streaker) Adams? clumsy challenge on Emilio Palacios for the penalty.

?One area for concern came from a lack of experience and exposure to international football as we let them come back,? he continued.

?I thought we got a little complacent and allowed them too much space which is how they got the penalty.

?And we were lucky they only hit the post when we again gave them space.

?We have to learn how to play at two-nil up, that is something else we can take out of this match.?

Thompson made seven changes to the starting line-up from Wednesday?s 3-0 victory and was particularly happy with a number of the new faces he brought in as well as the performances of those who remained from the opening game of the two-match series.

?Meshach (Wade) was steady as usual and I was very happy with Shannon (Burgess) at the back,? continued Thompson, whose side will now face a potentially tricky visit to Nicaragua, provisionally scheduled for the end of the month.

?In fact the whole backline was fantastic out there. Domico (Coddington) played very well as did John (Barry Nusum).

?There were a number of good performances out there. It was a good game for us, although, like I said, I wasn?t at all pleased with the first half display.?

And how much did a victory without Shaun Goater mean to Thompson?

?It?s important, absolutely,? he said.

?As I have said all along, it is all about developing a squad that can cope with any individual absences. There is no doubt that playing with Shaun (Goater) in the side gives us something extra but we have to be able to manage without any player or players and it is very pleasing that we got another victory even though he is now back in England.?

With two more victories under his belt as national team manager and the warm-up for the vital June El Salvador clashes going smoothly, Thompson was delighted with the way this week has gone for Bermudian football.

?These two games were worth playing, most definitely,? he added.

?We learnt a lot from both of them in different ways and I feel the extra games we have played together can only help. It is all about giving the players as much experience as possible in the international arena.

?There are some other games planned and we are looking in good shape ahead of the El Salvador games.?
