Off-duty taxi driver and truck driver banned for drink-driving

An off-duty taxi driver and truck driver admitted to driving while impaired when they appeared at Magistrates' Court.

Goodwin Tavares, 54, of Hillview Road, Warwick, admitted to driving his taxi car on Middle Road in Paget while his ability to drive was impaired by an alcohol or a drug.

The court heard that on April 26, at 8.25 p.m. Tavares was seen driving erratically, swerving from side to side over the west bound lane into the east bound one.

Police stopped the taxi and noticed that he had a strong smell of alcohol on his breath and his eyes were glazed.

Tavares was taken to Hamilton Police Station and charged for the offence.

In court he was fined $1,000 and disqualified from driving all vehicles for 12 months.

The same punishment was given to Antoine Simmons, 43, of Random Lane West, Warwick, who admitted to driving while impaired on May 26, 2007, when he appeared at court.

The court heard that at 4.55 p.m. Simmons was seen riding his motorcycle with one hand on the handle bars and the other holding a green bottle.

Police on duty in a marked vehicle stopped him and noticed the smell of intoxicants and that his eyes were glazed.

Simmons, a truck driver, asked the court for leniency. However, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000 and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 12 months.
