Homeless man given `last chance'
prevented him from using a derelict property in Sandys.
Richard Michael Dill, 25, was found huddled in a sheet when Police searched the building, on private land close to Hog Bay Park. He was charged with trespassing and wandering abroad.
Prosecuting in Magistrates' Court, Insp. Peter Duffy said Police had received several complaints of vagrants trespassing in the building.
Dill, who claimed he had been thrown out of his home, said: "The National Trust people told me and these other guys that they would let us use the building until they find a place for us. They said we could stay there as long as we cleaned up our trash.
"Where do you want me to sleep? Do you want me to sleep on the concrete on the main road?'' Duty counsel Ms Elizabeth Christopher said: "It seems had has not done any evil. He thought he had implicit permission to go there.'' Insp. Duffy said: "It is not a National Trust property. Vagrants go in there and it is an ongoing problem.'' He pointed out there had been a fire in the building the night of Dill's arrest but stressed that he did not blame the defendant for the blaze.
Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis told Dill that he would give him one last chance.
He told Dill that he must return home and abide by the rules of the owner of the house. "If you want to sleep there play by the rules, or find you own place.
"This other building is becoming a place where people sleep rough and people do not want that.'' He gave Dill conditional discharges for both offences.
Dill was also fined $100 for obstructing the Police in a bus shelter close to the Sandys Supermarket.
Dill said he had resisted because he was not happy with the way the Police had initially grabbed him.
