Square is made colourful

Trevor Lazarus and his wife Cheryl Fletcher sit and wait for the ferry after the official opening of the Waterfront Square, on Front Street, yesterday afternoon.

What was once the corner of a Front Street car park has now been reopened as an open space for pedestrians.

Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling formally cut the ribbon yesterday on Waterfront Square, which he hopes will give residents and visitors a quiet place to sit while in the city.

He called the space, which used to be a section of the Number One Shed, a "wonderful, open, recreational space."

"All of this is in keeping with our vision to continue to find ways to beautify the city and effectively use space to enhance the lives of those who live, work and visit Hamilton," the Mayor said.

"I encourage each of you to make the time to come and enjoy this space and any of the other purpose-built recreational areas in the city."
