Old maps saved for generations

showing the kind of ships used and the land ownership patterns that existed in Paget and Warwick hundreds of years ago.

Mr. Brian Burland, who is currently living in Essex, Connecticut, said both maps have been passed on in his family since they were drawn in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The first, which depicts two-thirds of the Island from Southampton to Smith's Parish shows the kinds of ships that were used in Bermuda in the 1790s.

Mr. Burland said the map, a copy of Norwood's second survey of the Island, was drawn by his great great grandfather as a boy in 1788.

"He (Beau Nathaniel Darrell) was 10-12 years old when he drew this, it was an assignment from his tutor.'' Mr. Burland said Nathaniel Darrell's father owned ships and soon the younger Darrell owned a set of ship's which were built at what later became Darrell's Wharf.

Meanwhile the other map which was drawn in the early 1800s showed the various families that owned land in Warwick, Paget and Pembroke.

Names on the map included the Triminghams, the Butterfields, the Friths and the Darrells.

GUILTY OF SEXUAL ASSAULT CTS Guilty of sexual assault The Pembroke man who sexually assaulted a woman on Cedar Avenue on Monday was yesterday told he could not be with his family over Christmas.

Gary Marcello Jones, 45, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to the charge.

Sergeant Earl Kirby, prosecuting, said Jones was following a 25-year-old woman along Cedar Avenue at 1:25 p.m. She made several attempts to move away, but Jones kept pace.

When they got to the door of her employer's legal firm, Jones slapped her and grabbed her right buttock, said Sgt. Kirby. The woman then kicked Jones.

"That's not nice, lady,'' Jones reportedly said, before running away.

The victim later went out with her employer to find Jones. Spotting him on Reid Street, they alerted a nearby Policeman and Jones was arrested, said Sgt.

Kirby.

Sgt. Kirby told the court that Jones had a history of convictions for intruding on the privacy of a female and sexual assault dating back to 1978.

"I wasn't well during all that time. I was a sick man,'' Jones replied.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis rejected Jones' plea that he might be allowed to spend Christmas with his family, saying, "No way, not with what I see here.'' He remanded Jones into custody until a social inquiry report could be prepared. Jones will be back in court on January 31.
