'Football is the winner'
Larry Mussenden said the atmosphere at last night's title decider vindicated the Bermuda Football Association's decision to play the match.
Abandoning the season was on everyone's minds when violence put a halt to the Friendship Trophy on Sunday, but the association's president declared the ‘show must go on'.
And Mussenden stands by that after watching Dandy Town pick up the Premier Division trophy - even allowing Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith to make the presentation.
“I said on Sunday that football was going to be the winner,” said Mussenden last night, looking relaxed for the first time in days.
“We were not going to let these thugs spoil the remainder of the season for everyone and I think we can be satisfied that it has proved to be the right decision.
“If you look around you can see the crowds out in good numbers, there is no trouble and everything is going smoothly. This is what Bermuda football needed - the family of football has prevailed.”
Although Mussenden was perhaps a little over-enthused by the size of the crowd - it probably wasn't as big as a title decider warranted - his assessment otherwise appeared correct with the Police reporting almost no trouble.
Five officers had been hired by the BFA as had a security team and the remaining officers, members of the Police Support Unit, were there on normal public order duties at no charge.
“I am grateful to the Police and the security staff this evening and I am pleased with the co-operation we have had from our member clubs in getting the season completed,” he continued.
“This is the right sort of atmosphere football should be played in and I am happy that we can return to talking about the football.
“Sunday's events will not be quickly forgotten but it is important that we as a football family move on and I think we have done that to some degree tonight.
“And I would like to congratulate Dandy Town on their victory on a wonderful night of football for Bermuda.”
