Kids' teeth can have healthy start -- gratis
-- in Somerset, Hamilton and St. George. They are manned by four dentists and ten support staff who report to a senior dental officer.
The Dental Department is divided into the control programme, which provides treatment services, and the preventive programme.
The control programme provides dental treatment for the Island's schoolchildren up to age 18. Also, included in the group are children studying abroad or those at Bermuda College and Roger B. Chaffee School at the US Naval Air Station.
Treatment is also available at the Co-Ed prison facility, Prison Farm, Casemates Prison, St. Brendan's Hospital, Lefroy House, Friendship Vale School, Adult Education School, Orange Valley School, Christian Deliverance School, Opportunity Workshop and Observatory Cottage. Students are assigned to a clinic according to the school which they attend to more evenly distribute the large numbers of patients requiring treatment, particularly, in the Hamilton area. Also, monthly waiting lists have been established to better manage the patient load and emergencies.
It is best to call early for an appointment. And calling at least five months prior to the desired appointment time is suggested in cases of special need.
The preventive dental programme incorporates the distribution of fluoride supplements to children from four months to the end of their first year of secondary school.
The dental department staff are highly trained, professional individuals, and receive regular continuing education through local and overseas seminars so that they can maintain high standards. Dental officers are skilled in the management of children and fearful patients and interceptive orthodontics.
Each clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art materials and as the safest sterilisation device -- the steam autoclave.
