Senior cricket umpire airlifted overseas after fall
A Hamilton Parish man airlifted overseas for medical treatment after suffering serious head injuries has been confirmed as senior cricket umpire Kent Gibbons.
Sports sources told The Royal Gazette that Mr Gibbons, who officiated at Cup Match and has featured prominently in local sports for more than 20 years, was hurt in the early hours of Saturday outside his Redkiln Road home.
According to police, the 49-year-old was injured at around 3am when he fell ten feet from a wall to the pavement outside his residence.
Mr Gibbons has distinguished himself at the international level, having umpired overseas for the International Cricket Council.
In March of last year he made sporting history after being chosen to officiate at the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 Tournament, along with locals Roger Dill, Stephen Douglas and Richard Austin, when the matches were held in Bermuda. It was the first occasion on which four umpires from the same country oversaw the tournament.
Mr Gibbons is also the son of late Bailey’s Bay and St George’s Cup Match scorer Fred Gibbons, as well as cousin to Americas Elite umpire Mr Douglas.
He was treated at the scene of Saturday’s accident by EMTs before being taken to Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Police have called for witnesses or anyone with information to contact Pc Anthony Thurab at Southside Police Station on 293-2222.
