Village book cup berth
North Village booked their place in the Dudley Eve competition with this comprehensive win against Boulevard at St.David's yesterday.
But despite the comfortable margin of victory, Village coach Kenny Thompson said he was still expecting better from his team.
"At this moment we are not playing to the level we should be playing,'' he said afterwards.
"We try to play entertaining football and get results and that is difficult thing to do.'' Certainly Boulevard began the brighter of the two teams, pressuring the visitors from the outset.
However, few clear cut chances were created with the home side soon reduced to speculative long-range shots.
Jahmel Samuals was unlucky in the seventh minute when his sweetly struck long range drive went the wrong side of the post.
But as the half wore on, Village began to get a grip on the game -- with Jawan Thomas, Neil Robinson and Dwight Warren all showing the necessary composure in the heat of the battle.
In the 16th minute a sweet cross from Neil Robinson was met by Lamont Simmons who snuck between two defenders to plant a glancing header past the stranded keeper.
Boulevard occasionally threatened with Vernon Phillips looking dangerous but their hit and hope style was particularly unsuited to the blustery conditions.
More North Village pressure won a corner in the 40th minute. Dwight Warren's kick evaded a packed box and landed at the feet of Kimande Binns at the far post who tucked it away from three yards out.
An inspired half-time substitution saw Kevin Jennings replace Sergio Goater and his electric pace caused Boulevard all sorts of problems.
In the 60th minute Jennings burst down the right flank where his low cross was met by Dwight Warren who couldn't miss from a yard out.
And Boulevard keeper Andre Hendrickson did well to deny Warren moments later when he parried a powerful header from point-blank range.
After the game Thompson summed up his thoughts on the game.
"I think we struggled early on in the first half against the wind. It was a little bit more difficult to build up. But we still managed to get two goals in the first half.
"We try to circulate the ball more than anyone else in the country -- everybody else tries to kick the long ball, trying to get results.
"Our philosophy is difficult because it needs a lot of concentration as you try to retain possession.'' And it's a formula his side will be sticking with as they approach the Dudley Eve.
Thompson added: "I think we have a chance -- we are as good as anyone else and we are the defending champions.''
