Anna Knapman, Christie Meacham and Mark Henderson were last week awarded with United World College Scholarships by a local selection committee.

Bermudian students have been attending United World Colleges since 1963 and over the years UWC has sent more than 50 young people to various colleges.

There are ten UWC schools around the world.

The UWC movement was founded in the late 1950's by Kurt Hahn under the premise that in order to spread the message of peace, institutions needed to be formed where students from around the world could meet and learn the benefits of cooperation. Ms Knapman, Bermuda High School for Girls' head girl, will be attending the UWC's Atlantic College in Wales. Ms Meacham, deputy head girl for BHS, will be going to the UWC's Lester B. Pearson College in Canada and Mr. Henderson, a house prefect at Saltus Grammar School, will attend UWC's Armand Hammer College in New Mexico, USA.

Said UWC's local secretary Judith Brewer: "All three students are of a very high academic calibre, are actively involved in the community and participate in numerous extracurricular activities.'' Governor Thorold Masefield, patron of the UWC movement in Bermuda, hosted a reception at Government House last week in honour of the 1997 UWC scholarship winners.
