A woman who was involved in a head-on collision while over the legal drink drive limit was yesterday banned from the roads for 18 months.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Zyanne Lema, 21, left the Rum Bum Beach Bar at Horseshoe Bay, Southampton, on a motorcycle, but swerved into the opposite lane on Horseshoe Bay Beach Road and collided with a car.

Carrington Mahoney, for the Crown, said that Lema, who admitted driving while over the legal limit, was injured after she was knocked off her motorcycle and that the collision caused “significant damage” to both vehicles.

Lema was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment to her injuries.

Police suspected her of drink driving and requested samples of her blood for analysis.

The test showed that Lema had 158 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg/100ml. The incident took place on the afternoon of October 3 last year.

Magistrate Maxanne Anderson banned Lema, from Pembroke, from driving for 18 months and fined her $1,500.
